Hickman sets his sights on first international road race victory

BSB star confident he’ll be able to challenge at the Metzeler Ulster Grand Prix

PETER Hickman is confident he’ll be in contention for his maiden international road racing win when the 2015 Metzeler Ulster Grand Prix kicks off in less than a month’s time.

The 28-year-old is hoping to build on his impressive debut at Dundrod last year, where he recorded the fastest ever newcomer lap, took victory in the Dundrod 150 National race and shared joint honours as best newcomer with James Cowton.

Hickman will return to the Metzeler Ulster Grand Prix with the Briggs Equipment BMW team, the same squad he races with in British Superbikes, and he’s already looking forward to getting back out on the roads.

Hickman said: “I can’t wait to get going at the Ulster, I really enjoyed myself last year. The track seems to suit my style as there are lots of long, flowing corners and it’s easy to get a rhythm.

“The circuit wasn’t too difficult for me to learn. The hardest thing last season was moving from a Honda in BSB to a BMW on different tyres for the roads, but this year it’s the same bike and the same team so we should be strong.

“I’ve had a lot of time on the bike and my fitness is good again so we’re in a good place.”

An experienced BSB campaigner, Hickman has proven himself as a natural talent on the roads with a number of top ten finishes at the three international meetings, and is hoping to build on this form at Dundrod.

He added: “I’ve had some good results on the roads and I’m confident I can do it at the Ulster. If everything falls into place with the bike and the conditions the podium is definitely possible and I’d like to be in the position to push for the win.”

Hickman’s comments came as Plant Lubrication NI were announced as the official sponsor of the 2015 Dundrod 150 races, the same event where he took his maiden road racing win last year.

Noel Johnston, Clerk of the Course at the Metzeler Ulster Grand Prix said: “We’re excited to see Peter back at Dundrod for a second year. He’s been nothing short of spectacular on the roads so far and it’s easy to forget that he only made his debut in 2014.

“His win in the national race last year was a particular highlight for me. The Dundrod 150 on the Thursday of Bike Week is a great way for newcomers to get time on track and up and coming talents like Peter to show us what they can do.

“We’re also delighted to have Plant Lubrication NI sponsoring the Dundrod 150 national races. Together we’re looking forward to another great year.”
